Opal is a slightly translucent and mysterious gem. It is a hydrated from of silica, and water content may range from 3% to 21% by weight, but actually it is usually 6% to 10% in total. Opal was formed many years ago in cracks and spaces, by the combination of silica and water. This then gradually hardened and solidified to become opals. It contains water, so it should be protected from heat and high temperature. Its most outstanding characteristic is an unusual display of many colors, flashing out like mini-rainbows. The mini-rainbow seen in most opals result from light interference created by these silica spheres. It can exhibit varying degrees of transparency from opaque to translucent or transparent. Opal is cut and polished to form cabochon, for gemstone use.
